Double A-side “Hold Me Down” and “U Gone & Dun It” mark the inaugural release for Manchester based ‘King DJ. One half of belligerent garage two piece, Brown Brogues, ‘King DJ is one of singer songwriter Mark Vernon’s other projects.

Casually experimental and challengingly indefinite, howling vocals cut through a languid guitar, with lascivious, gyrating rhythms. Knowingly wry lyrics are delivered with an aloof detachment. An outlet to try things that wouldn’t work with other projects, Vernon surmises King DJ as ‘complete freedom. I’m only doing what I want to do and what I enjoy’.

Citing influences as varied as Atlas Sound, Suicide, Lou Reed and GZA - ‘King DJ is appropriately uncompromising, nuanced and idiosyncratic.

Hold Me Down offers a poppier respite, with a thrashing tempo and breathless, rasping vocals alongside an irresistibly pulsating melody. In cassette format, with an ambiguous looking ‘K’, this understated release is just the beginning…

U Gon And Dun It’s distorted and decelerated psychobilly captivates and surprises, with echoes of The Cramps and The Gun Club, building with a satisfying internal momentum. Sinister, reverberating vocals fitting of lyrical themes exploring the darker side of human nature, paranoia, regret and doing something terrible and getting away with it.

Video

Video
